Frequently Asked Questions
What is Equine Facilitated Learning (EFL)?
EFL stands for Equine Facilitated Learning and is a program built around the HERD (Human-Equine Relational Development) Institute founded by Dr Veronica Lac Ph.D., LPC. This approach to learning is influenced by the existential-humanistic and Gestalt therapy training that encourages us to attend to the individual needs of our clients so that we can create powerful and transformative experiences in partnership with our horses.
Is EFL “horse therapy”?
Although there are a variety of beneficial and therapeutic effects of spending time with horses, EFL is not considered therapy. We do not diagnose, or attempt to remediate health problems. Our program offers our clients a chance to find some peace by working with the horses, and take a step outside of their everyday challenges. Although we welcome discussion, we will not push our clients to face any challenges that they are not ready to face.
Will I ride a horse?
This is one of the most frequently asked questions, and the answer depends on the participant and their goals. Some of our clients have mounted exercises as part of their sessions, however we are not a program that offers to teach classic horseback riding. Although many of our neuro-divergent clients are able to safely ride with limited assistance, we do not have the equipment required for therapeutic riding, which would allow for people with physical and balance challenges to safely ride.
Do I have to buy a package of sessions?
No. In an attempt to make EFL accessible to everyone, we do not charge more for individual sessions.
